The ARLIS/Twin Cities chapter held its spring meeting Wednesday, April 18 at the new Minneapolis Central Library.  Kathy Heuer, chapter president, convened the meeting at 10 am.  Following introductions, Kristen Mastel, chapter Secretary/Treasurer stated the current balance of the chapter bank account was reported at $733.58.   Dues were also collected for the 2007 ARLIS/NA TC fiscal year.  No changes were suggested for the fall 2006 meeting minutes.  Next, Kathy Heuer presented Kay Streng with the first ARLIS/TC Travel Award in the amount of $200.  Kay thanked Kathy, and the rest of the Travel Award Committee for the honor.

Under New Business the donation of funds for the ARLIS/NA conference welcoming party was discussed.  During this time the frequency of funds from ARLIS/TC to the conference, the desire to use funds to continue the local Travel Award and other sources of funding for the conference were brought up.  There was no motion to discuss further and therefore no motion to contribute funds to the conference.  Kathy Heuer represented ARLIS/TC at the St. Catherine MLIS Organization Fair on April 16, 2007.  There she handed out literature about ARLIS/NA, and talked about ARLIS/TC.  Kathy collected several names of students who are interested in ARLIS/TC, and their names will be added to the group e-mail list.

The final item of business was the discussion of possible venues for our summer and subsequent meetings.  Kathy suggested that we visit the Minnesota Arboretum and its library during the summer (possibly June) and the Minnesota center for Book Arts in the fall.  Kay Streng suggested the Bakken Museum Library, which has a collection of rare books and manuscripts.  Herb suggested a tour of the new Guthrie Theater.  A discussion of the architecture followed.  Kathy Heuer, Marth Ruddy and Joon Mornes will work on arranging a time for a group tour this summer of the Guthrie Theater.  Other suggestions included visiting the University of Minnesota campus, and special or corporate libraries.

The meeting adjourned and was followed by a tour of the new Minneapolis Central Library led by volunteer tour guide, Hans Koch.  The hour and a half tour looked into the design, functionality and public art of the new building.  The Central Library is truly an “innovation” in itself, as Hans listed over twenty innovations of the library, ranging from colored keyboards in the children’s area, low emissions glass, a green roof, and the amazing feat of the Friends group to raise money to furnish the library.  Thank you MPL for being fabulous hosts for our meeting.

Respectfully submitted,

Kristen Mastel
