Deborah K. Ultan, the Art and Art History Librarian at the University of Minnesota agreed to give us tour of Aesthetic REVOLUTION: Periodicals and the New Art, 1890-1900, at the James Ford Bell Library on the 4th floor of Wilson Library. This exhibition was co-curated by Leigh Roethke, an Art History Ph.D candidate and the exhibition poster and handouts were designed by a graphic arts student. The exhibition was underwritten by the Frances V. Gorman Fund. Herb Scherer was able to offer some background on the history of the fund.

The featured periodicals are mostly American, British, French and German from 1890-1900 which coincided with the beginning of the Art Nouveau movement. Publishers began to embrace the idea of incorporating images with text and the different print forms included woodcuts and lithography. Many of the images feature the stylized flora and fauna typical of this era.

Before the tour, the group enjoyed some fruit, pastries and coffee. Our new Chair, Jennifer Nodes was welcomed, and thanks were given to Alysia Peich, our outgoing chair. Rebecca Moss will remain as Secretary/Treasurer for one more year. Volunteers for the office of Chair Elect were solicited, and Jodie Walz agreed to take on the challenge beginning in 2004. Kay Streng will take over as Secretary/Treasurer at the same time.

We discussed the Chapter bank account, which has been moved to another type of account which doesn’t accrue interest, but also has no monthly charges. It is time for membership renewals, so all members who have yet to theirs in, please do so soon. The membership form is located on the Chapter website at http://www.arthist.umn.edu/slides/ARLIS/

Suggestions for the next meeting included a tour of the Goldstein Gallery at the St. Paul campus of the University of Minnesota. Another possibility is a tour of ColorMax, the company that is currently digitizing the St. John’s Bible. More information about this project can be found at: http://www.paynesvillearea.com/News/HeadlinesArticles/archives/100902/1009stjohnbible.html Our next meeting will be scheduled in early summer.

A discussion of how to seek additional members then ensued. We decided to check the local private colleges, especially those with art history programs. St. Thomas, McCallister and St. Catherine’s were among those mentioned. It was also suggested that we check the current listing of ARLIS/NA members in the Twin Cities area to make sure they are aware of our Chapter.

Respectfully submitted by Rebecca A. Moss
