Financial Aid Applications

Every year, toward the end of January, students who seek departmental support for the following academic year must fill out the appropriate financial aid form. Students will be notified in advance of the deadline that applications are due.

First Year (MA) students applying for second year funding
Second Year(MA) students applying for third year funding
Third Year(PHD) students applying for fourth year funding
Fourth Year(PHD) students applying for fifth year funding
Fifth Year(PHD) students applying for sixth year funding
Sixth Year(PHD) students applying for funding beyond sixth year

Teaching Assistantships and Tuition Fellowships

The Department of Art History tries to fund all of its admitted students. It offers three main types of financial aid for a maximum of two years toward the M.A. and three years toward the Ph.D.:

1. Students who receive a teaching assistant award are employed as assistants for professors for specific courses. The appointment is generally on a half time basis (780 hours per semester). A half-time T.A. position for two semesters pays approximately $11,900 (2005-2006 rate), includes a full tuition fellowship, and qualifies the student for resident tuition rates. There are additional health insurance benefits for graduate assistants. Consult the Graduate Assistant Employment Office webpage for further details.
2. Students who receive a research assistant award are employed as assistants in the Visual Resources Center. The appointment is generally on a half time basis (780 hours per semester). Other Possible Awards

Outstanding incoming students may be nominated by the Department for a highly competitive Graduate School Fellowship. This award covers all tuition costs and includes a stipend. In addition, the Department may nominate students for the annual Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship award. This award also covers all tuition costs and includes a stipend. There are also a number of other dissertation fellowships offered through the Graduate School. Consult their website for more information.

Faculty members receiving research grants may hire a research assistant. In exceptional cases, cash fellowships may be awarded.

To be considered for financial aid, complete a departmental financial aid form and submit it to the department by the announced January deadline.

Financial aid offers are made following the completion of admissions decisions.

Outside Funding Sources

Throughout the year, the Department receives notices of funding opportunities from private institutions and foundations. Information on applications is posted in the T.A. office (320 Heller), and on the graduate bulletin board (next to 320 Heller). Application materials can be obtained from the Graduate Studies office.

Student Employment

Administrative, teaching, and research assistantships throughout the university are posted in Heller Hall, on the graduate bulletin board, and in the third floor hallway of Johnston Hall.
