Interests:

Sheila McNally’s research focuses primarily on transitions from the Roman to the medieval and modern worlds: she has excavated at

  • Split ( Croatia ), studying the format of a Roman palace and the stages of its transformation into a medieval and modern city
  • Akhmim ( Egypt ) uncovering houses of the later Roman and early Arab periods, and later levels.

At present she is working with an International Consortium on

  • The White and Red Monasteries ( Egypt), a project again relating original forms to later developments: see http://Egypt.cla.umn.edu. Her specific interest is analyzing what the development of monastic space tells us about communal life inside and outside the monastic walls.

Teaching interests include exploring the ways that ancient myths have remained alive in art, and the relationship between word and image through student construction of web pages.
